Bob Mizer & Tom of Finland guest curator and artist Richard Hawkins on the collages found in Bob Mizer’s archives:
To my mind, there is no clearer representation of Mizer’s almost manic attempts to condense the joyful, celebratory chaos of his daily photo shoots down to their most selectively stupendous moments than his catalogue boards. Early on in his career, the photographer began consistently creating them for each and every shoot. Even as mere production tools, they elicit clear evidence of Mizer’s prolific working method and tendency to want to share—unsparingly and in superabundance—the sheer, fascinating splendor that he found in putting his ever-replenishing bumper crop of young men through the paces at the Athletic Model Guild.
Hawkins’ essay in full is available on The Curve. Bob Mizer & Tom of Finland is at MOCA Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood through January 26, 2014.
